At Afro Sisters, every product starts from a simple observation: kinky hair
doesn't lack care, it lacks care
designed for it. Before choosing an active ingredient, we ask ourselves what
it actually does for this particular hair type, rather than what it allows
us to write on packaging. It is this selection process, as much as
the formula itself, that sets our products apart.
Spirulina
This freshwater microalgae is one of the most nutrient-dense plant-based ingredients available: amino acids, B vitamins, iron, antioxidants. In Hairitages, it plays a dual role: it helps balance a scalp prone to imbalance while strengthening the hair fiber at the root, where curly hair breaks most often. We select it for its concentration of active nutrients, not for its marketing appeal.
The banana
Long used in family hair care rituals before becoming a marketing claim, banana owes its reputation to its richness in potassium and vitamins, which soften the hair fiber and restore its hold. In Banana Mask,, it is combined with plant-based proteins that fill in the weakened areas of the fiber, particularly useful after bleaching, straightening, or simply everyday wear and tear.
Tapioca
Extracted from cassava root, this powder has the unique property of forming a lightweight gel once hydrated, which deeply moisturizes without weighing down or stiffening the curl. It is a difficult balance to achieve on textured hair: too much poorly formulated hydration flattens the curl, while too little leaves it dry and porous. Coily Cream relies on this active ingredient to provide long-lasting definition without a crunchy effect or residue.
Neem oil
Used for generations in traditional care for its purifying properties, neem oil soothes sensitive scalps or those prone to irritation. In Jelly Care, it helps balance a weakened scalp without ever drying out the lengths, unlike most conventional purifying shampoos.
Our formulation standard
All our formulas are developed and manufactured in small batches in France, with at least 99% naturally derived ingredients, free from sulfates and silicones. Each product undergoes a safety assessment (CPSR) before being placed on the market, and we document the origin and natural content of every formula. This is not a selling point we use to boost sales: it is the minimum requirement for us to put our name on it.
